Women in leadership by ??

Does our government look like the people of Northern Ireland is it reflective of its people???

In early 2000 only 14 countries from around the world had cabinets (governments) where women held at least half of all posts.

Examples: Rwanda, Finland, Canada, Colombia and Peru.

Walk in their shoes:
Women seeking public office face multiple hurdles including lack of support from political parties, which makes it important that countries introduce quotas for female representation.

Governments have the power to criminalise violence against women in politics and call on social media platforms to tackle rising cyber abuse much of it involving sexual innuendo and body shaming which deters women from taking up public roles.

Do governments that are gender balanced make better decisions because they are more representative of the people they serve and do women bring a different perspective I believe so.

Female leaders for example Jacinda Arden from New Zeland and Angela Merkel from Germany have won praise for their handling of the Covid 19 crisis.  Women work with everyone and tend not to focus on just the politics but on finding the solutions.

Do they stand up for us or do they become like men when they get elected – for example Margaret Thatcher is it because they are on their own and they need to prove a point if there were as many women as men then they could just get on with the job in hand and not feel they have to address the patriarchal issues as well.

It is crucial that women play a leading role in the building of a more inclusive post-Covid 19 economies particularly as so many women have been pushed into poverty. If women do not recover from the poverty they have been thrown into because of Covid, many families and communities are going to be in a very difficult situation for a very long time.

This will become a problem for everyone.
